Privacy Policy

Last updated 27 August 2026. This policy explains what Maths Scout does with information when an Australian parent or guardian uses our maths tutoring service for children in Years 3–6.

Who we are and who our accounts are for

Maths Scout is an online maths tutoring service for students in Years 3–6. Accounts are created and controlled by a parent, guardian or other authorised adult. We do not create accounts for children, and children do not need their own email address or password to learn — they use a Child Mode inside the parent's account.

What information we collect

We keep the information we need to run the service, and no more:

  • Parent account details: your first name, email address and an authentication record. Your password is handled by our authentication provider and is never visible to us in readable form.
  • Learner profiles you create: the first name or nickname you choose for your child, their year level, school term information and learning preferences. We ask you not to enter a child's full name, school, address or any other detail that isn't needed for teaching.
  • Learning activity: the questions shown, the answers submitted, whether they were correct, hints used, time taken, skill mastery estimates and assessment (Maths Check) results. This is what makes the tutoring personalised.
  • Parent PIN: if you set a PIN to protect Parent Mode, we store only a one-way cryptographic hash of it. We cannot read or recover your PIN.
  • Subscription records: your plan status, trial dates and identifiers issued by our payment provider. We do not receive or store your full card number.
  • Service and error logs: limited technical records used to keep the app working and to control the cost of AI explanations.

How we use it

  • To work out what your child already knows and what to teach next.
  • To generate spoken and written explanations during a lesson.
  • To show you progress reports and assessment results.
  • To manage your account, trial and subscription.
  • To keep the service secure, diagnose faults and improve teaching quality.

We do not sell your information, and we do not use children's learning activity for advertising or profiling unrelated to their maths learning.

Service providers we rely on

Running the service means sharing some information with providers who act on our instructions:

  • Supabase — database, authentication and hosting of your account and learning data.
  • Stripe — subscription billing and payments. Card details are entered directly with Stripe, not with us.
  • AI model providers — used to write the wording of hints and explanations. We send the maths content of the question and a short learning context. We do not send your email address, your payment details or your child's surname.

Some of these providers process and store data outside Australia. By using the service you accept that this overseas processing takes place.

Children's privacy

Because a parent or guardian creates and controls every account, the adult account holder decides what a learner profile contains and can review or change it at any time. Child Mode does not include messaging, social features, user-to-user content or third-party advertising. We ask children only for their answers to maths questions.

How long we keep information

We keep account and learning data while your account is open, because progress history is what makes the tutoring work over time. If you ask us to delete your account, we delete your account, learner profiles and learning history, other than records we must keep for legal, tax or accounting reasons (for example billing records).

Access, correction and deletion

You can view and edit learner profiles and progress in Parent Mode at any time. To request access to your information, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete your account and data, email connect@mathsscout.com.au from the email address on the account. We will confirm your request before acting on it and aim to respond within 30 days.

Security — and its limits

We protect information with encrypted connections, database access rules that restrict each account to its own data, server-side authorisation checks on private operations, and one-way hashing of parent PINs. We keep payment card data out of our systems entirely.

No online service can promise perfect security. We cannot guarantee that unauthorised access will never occur, and you are responsible for keeping your password and parent PIN private. If a data breach occurs that is likely to cause serious harm, we will notify affected account holders and the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner as required by Australian law.

Cookies and local storage

We use browser storage for things the service needs to function: keeping you signed in, remembering which learner is selected, and remembering whether the app is in Child Mode. We do not use advertising or cross-site tracking cookies.

Changes to this policy

If we change this policy we will update the date above. Where a change materially affects how we handle your information, we will tell account holders by email or in the app.
